The City of Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona with a population of approximately 550,000. The Tucson Police Department consists of approximately 900 sworn members. The Department maintains a part-time Special Weapons and Tactics team of 50 members and averages approximately 150-200 operations a year.In June of 2019, a male began physically abusing his girlfriend. The victim went into hiding as the suspect began to aggressively stalk and harass her. TPD Patrol units responded and located the suspect at his house. He armed himself, barricaded inside and took his eight year old son hostage.TPD SWAT responded and worked the hostage rescue. Over the course of several hours, covert robotics and cameras were used to locate and contain the hostage and hostage taker to a single bedroom. The Pima Regional SWAT team responded out to rotate tactical teams due to the duration of the callout. TPD and Pima Regional coordinated a team transition. Pima Regional continued the callout for several more hours which culminated in a deliberate hostage rescue entry.
Sergeant Dain Salisbury has served on the SWAT team for seven years with 650 operations. Sergeant John Malovich has served on the SWAT team for 18 years with 1,400 operations.
