Surviving Critical Incidents
 
Course Description:
This course will cover the following topics;
 • Overview of Critical Incident Stress Management:
    o Crisis Intervention, Continuum of CISM, Comprehensive CISM Programs, Impact of         Stress on Human Physiology, and Emergency Service Personality Traits
 • Specialty Units:
    o Mind Set, Team Environment, View of a Crisis, Group Dynamics
 • Expectations:
    o Crisis Intervention vs. Critique, Challenges to Intervention Models, Non-Operational         Aspects, Post-Intervention Support, Follow Up, On-Going Crisis
 • Establishing Specialty Components to Existing Structures:
    o Recruitment, Training, Maintenance, Networking, Pre-Incident Education

Instructor:

Captain Michael R. Cobb, BCETS

Michael Cobb currently serves as a Captain with the Richland, Washington Police Department. Captain Cobb has been with the department since 1982, has 16 years experience as a member of the special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team and served as a K-9 handler for 9 years. Captain Cobb is a past President of the Washington State Tactical Officers Association (WSTOA), served as an instructor at the Basic SWAT School for 12 years, is the co-founder / law enforcement coordinator of the Tri-County Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) Network, and the Zone 5 representative for the Washington State CISM Net. Mike has a Bachelor’s degree in Education, is a faculty member with the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation and serves on the ICISF's Speakers Bureau and International Advisory Committee. He is a recognized instructor for CISM: Group Crisis Intervention, CISM: Advanced Group Crisis Intervention, CISM: Peer Support/Individual Crisis Intervention and CISM in Law Enforcement programs. Mike continues to provide CISM services to the WSTOA and other tactical teams across North America. In 2000 the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress recognized Captain Cobb as a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress and he continues as a Dipolmate member with the AAETS and the National Center for Crisis Management.
